OUT OF THE LOCKER
The challenge sailing match between the Takapuna Boating Club and the Manukau Yacht Club, in keelers on the Waitemata. is exciting much interest. It is scheduled for the end of January. On Monday evening the Manukau Club selected Mr. William Hudson as skipper of the club crew which has yet to be selected. Mr. Hudson owns Waitere IL and formerly sailed Elsie. He has been club champion for the last four years and in 10 years has won the premier place six times. Friendly competition between the sailing men of the two harbours is worth cultivating. The competition for one-man sailings in Z boat on the Manukau for the purpose of raising funds to send a Z boat crew to Lyttelton fr-r the Cornwell Cup. has brought 20 nominations. The entries are confined to seniors and some of the competitors have not handled a boat for years, but they are game to try their hand in this event. * * * Joan B, owned by Mr. J. Boadle, is now moored in Hellyer's Creek, having been transferred from the Wairau. The boat will leave for a month’s cruise of the North before Christmas, taking a party of 10. The launch Raira cruised as far as Whangaparaoa on Sunday and then went outside Tiri. Ninety schnapper were secured. * * * A big crowd on Cheltenham Beach admired Viking coming up the channel on Sunday evening with all her canvas stretched to a firm breeze. The boat's pace was sprightly. * * * The two Manukau clubs have arranged a “working bee” for Saturday next to clean up and repair the ap proach to the jetty—a work that has been urgent for some time. mm* At the conclusion of the Takapuna Boating Club’s very satisfactory 50mile ocean race for mullet boats to Matiatia on Saturday the 26-footer Celox and the launch Teina were involved in a collision that ended in much damage to the latter. As Celox was moving in to find an anchorage in the gloom her bowsprit struck the coaming of the launch, smashing a porthole and seriously cracking the plank of the coaming.
