GUNS AND TORPEDOES
PRACTICES IN GULF CRUISERS AND SLOOPS Big guns will boom in the Hauraki Gulf next week when gunnery and torpedo practices will be carried out by the warships of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. H.M.S. Diomede will leave port on Monday and will be joined in the Gulf by H.M.S. Dunedin, which is coming up from Wellington for the purpose. The two warships will carry out manoeuvres'together for four days, and will return to Auckland on the afternoon of Friday next. H.M.S. Veronica and H.M.S. Laburnum will leave port next Wednesday and will spend 10 days in the Gulf completing their gunnery practice. They will spend the week-end of December 8-9 at Kawau and will return to Auckland on Friday, December 14. The four warships will remain in Auckland over the Christmas and New Year holidays. From December 15 to January 15 holiday leave will be apportioned to the ships’ companies, New Zealand ratings receiving a fortnight’s leave and English.ratings one week.
