ALARM AT THE VATICAN

TWO FLOORS COLLAPSE OMINOUS CRACKS ELSEWHERE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 12.17 p.m. ROME, Wednesday. The Vatican authorities are alarmed at the situation created by the collapse of two floors of the quarters occupied by the Papal guards. An engineer and an architect, following an examination, found it necessary immediately to strengthen the foundations of the palace itself, as ominous cracks have been discovered in other parts of it. Fears were felt in regard to the stability of an entire wing of the Vatican in which the Pope and private officials have their apartments, when the flooring of two large rooms on the ground floor suddenly collapsed yesterday, said an earlier message. These rooms formed part of the quarters occupied by the Palatine Guard. At the moment of the collapse they were not occupied. Engineers have since found that the collapse of the floors was due to the failure of the vaulted ceilings in the cellars. They had been carelessly built originally and bad suffered much in the past three centuries. A large masonry pillar was recently built in the centre of the vault, but it proved insufficient to prevent the accident.
