DEPARTMENTAL SHACKLES

INEFFICIENCY IN HIGHWAYS WORK INDEPENDENCE URGED (From, Our Oxen Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, To-day. Representations are to be made to the authorities to constitute the Main Highways Board a separate body and free from the control of the Public Works Department. This was the decision arrived at by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce at its half-yearly meeting yesterday at Pokeno. It said that as the board is at present constituted it is influenced by officers of the Public Works Department, and consequently inefficient and uneconomic methods were adopted. It was alleged that money had been flagrantly wasted in the construction of the deviation from Mercer to Bombay.
