POVERTY PLEA FAILS
WATERSIDER WHO STOLE (Special to THE SUXJ NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. The plea of poverty advanced by a waterside worker, R. J. Hughes, who was charged with stealing a quantity of crockery from the steamer Hertford, in the Police Cour: to-day. failed to convince the magistrate, Mr. R. W. Tate. Evidence showed accused had earned an average of £6 a week for the last 37 weeks. The magistrate held that the offence was inexcusable. He will announce his sentence to-morrow.
