PASSING OF A CHIEF
DESCENDANT OF GREAT WARRIOR (Special +o THE SUN) DARGAVILLE, Wednesday. One of the fine old Maori paramount chiefs of the Ngatiwhatu tribe. Haimona Piraka Ngai, has died near Dargaville at the age of 75 years. Haimona was a descendant of the great Maori giant and warrior, “Kawhaiu” and Piraka Ngai, the champion Maori marksman of the Kaipara district, who, on one occasion, avenged the death of Hongi Hika at Waiwhatawhata (Hokianga), and xsjas a nephew of Parore Te Awha. Haimona .Piraka was a man of powerful physique and in his younger days was a great athlete and warrior. He was formerly a member of the Wesleyan Church and was a great Christian worker. The chief, in conjunction with Parore, owned several properties in the district and was the first Maori to take up cattle and sheep-rearing and dairy farming. His creed was “goodfellowship and hospitality.” and his home was always open to bpth European and Maori. He was particularly well known for his kindness to all. Deceased is survived by a widow and five children.
