New Schooner to Cost £lß,ooo
For Coastal Trade AN AUCKLAND ORDER A new 120-foot schooner, ths largest vessel outsice the ferry steamers that has been built in Auckland for many years, will be laid down immediately after the Christmas holidays by Messrs. Chas. Bailey and Sons, Ltd.
rpHE vessel, the ow nership of which A has hot yet beeu made public, wifi cost in tho vicinity of .CIS.OOO.’ and will be used for coastal trading and passenger transport, being speciallv designed for the carriage of timber Her capacity will be about 200,000 superficial feet. The vessel w ill be about as long as a ferry steamer. It will be something over 34 feet in belfm and will have a draught of 6 feet 6 inches. It wifi have two crude-oil engines, each developing 120 horse power, which will give a speed of 10 knots. The vessel will be schooner-rigged, but sails will be only xi secondary means of propulsion. She wilT be three-skinned, of heart of * kauri, two skins being diagonal arid one fore and aft. There will be accommodation for 12 passengers besides the officers aft, and the fo’castle head will accommodate the crew. The winches will be operated by crude oil. An unusual feature will be a bridge deck, designed to give a view over timber cargoes. The construction wrill take about nine months.
