THEFTS OF CABLE
POWER BOARD SUFFERS FROM “EPIDEMIC” Since October 1, an ‘‘epidemic of thieving” has broken out and on six occasions lengths of cable to the total value of £43 have been stolen from construction work. This was reported to the Auckland Electric-Power Board yesterday by the general manager, Mr. R. H. Bartley. Mr. Bartley said the thieves cut the cable up, kept it until it looked fairly old, and then sold it to foundries. The stolen property was difficult to trace. The jobs were so scattered that it was hard to keep a strict watch, though the jobs were now patrolled. In one case cable was removed from a drum in Fanshawe Street in broad daylight, and the material was taken away in a cart. The report was received, the general manager stating that every means would be used to check thefts.
