Half Volleys
There have been such bumper attendances at the meetings of the Auckland L.T.A. that some delegates have had to stand. The result is that a new meeting-place has been obtained, the Drill ITall, off Wellesley Street, and it is expected that there will be seats for all at the next meeting on December 11.
1 itirangi Club, which has four grass courts and the advantage of Sunday play, opened its season on Sunday with a big attendance. A very moderate subscription is charged there, and members may' take advantage of Maungakiekie’s nineteenth.
At tlie last meeting of the Akarana Maori Association, it was announced that the contest for the Maori Davis Cup, the Rangi Marumaru Cup, would take place at Ngaruawahia in March next, about the time of the regatta. It will be a great gathering of the tribes, and Princess T© Puea, paramount chieftainess of the Waikato will probably be the hostess.
Ngataringa’s new pavilion is rearing the framework of its two storeys at Stanley Bay already, work having commenced last week. Complete with hot and cold showers, club room, and verandahs, it will be a good-sized building, 40 feet by 20, and it will cost 4,600. The club, he membership of which is swelling rapidly, hopes to have the pavilion complete by Christmas.
The progress of tennis at North Shore is marked. Last evening a new club was formed to take over the two temporary clay courts made on the three and a-half acres so far reclaimed at Melrose Park, in an arm of Shoal Bay. Last July this land was mangrove swamp. The northern enthusiasts will soon have long acres of sports ground there.
singles champion, Henri Gochet, first came into prominence as a figure in French tennis in 1921, when he was 20 years of age. He had learned his tennis on covered courts in Lyons, and was of local lame. In 1921 he won his regional championship, played in Lyons, and then went to Paris to compete in tlie military championship of the country. Ills win in this tournament gave him ins first national title, and marked his entry as a serious contender for future honours.
