BETTER SHIPPING SERVICE STATE SUBSIDY SOUGHT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) VANCOUVER, Thursday. Replying to a request from a delegation of British Columbia lumbermen for a subsidised steamship service to Australia, the Federal Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr. James Malcolm, to-day said the request conformed with the policy of his department, and he promised favourable consideration “within the not-distant future.” Mr Malcolm said the Government was unable to give a direct subsidy to any steamer for any special trade, although it could specify the type of vessel required for lumber and other commodities.
