MILITARY TRAINING
METHODISTS URGE EXEMPTION CLAUSE ANTI-WAR CAMPAIGN A united peace manifesto prepared by a special committee was received and discussed at Thursday’s session of the Methodist Church Synod. It urged the people of the Church to be outspoken in a vigorous campaign in the name of Christ for the utter abolition of the war system. The following resolutions were carried:— . “This synod is strongly convinced that the laws relating to military training should make provision for exemption from training and service on the ground of individual religious conviction, apart from the tenets of any church or denomination to which such objector may belong.” “This synod resorves that the Government be urged to abolish the system of compulsory military training as a practical expression of its cooperation in the matter of disarmament. Recognising the value of discipline to the young people of the Dominion, we recommend the substitution of compulsory physical training instead of the military system now in operation.”
