BY ONE VOTE

MR. ALLAN BELL WINS BAY OF ISLANDS COUNTRY PARTY DEFEAT (Special to THE SUN) KAWAKAWA, To-day. Five more votes have been found in the Bay of Islands count making Mr. Allan Bell (Reform) and Mr. H. M. Rushworth (Country Party) equal, with 3,839 votes each. The casting vote of the Returning Officer was given to Mr. Bell, who thereby wins the seat by one vote. A magisterial recount is cer-

from the Ratana candidate on the casting vote of the returning officer. A substantial lead has been gained by Mr. A. W. Hall, Reform candidate for Hauraki, who, on the official count, has a majority of 891 over Mr. E. Allan, the United candidate.

The Wallace seat has been retained by Mr. A. Hamilton, the sitting Reform member, who has a final majority of 19. Details are:

With the small majorities revealed in the final counts, it is probable that several demands will be made for magisterial recounts. Provision is made under the Electoral Act, 1927, for a candidate who believes that an incorrect number of votes has been declared, to apply for a recount. Application fo.r such recount has to be made within three days of the final declaration of the result of the poll. The recount has to take place as soon as possible in the presence of a magistrate or an officer appointed by him.
