In the Market Place
PEARS AT LOW RATES NEW POTATOES PLENTIFUL Pears are selling at very low rates on the City Markets. To-day, a large quantity of superior Hawke's Bay pears was offered, in addition to the ordinary grades, but the inquiry was poor. In the vegetable market, new potatoes are heavily supplied. They have dropped slightly in value. Barge quantities of local apples are coming from cool store, but values are low. , The demand for strawberries is good. Gooseberries are meeting with a keener sale, and there is a fair inquiry for bananas. Lemon sales are poor. Californian red grapes have advanced in price. Sydney oranges are cheaper. Large supplies of hothouse tomatoes are reaching the markets, and values have declined. Cabbages and cauliflowers are supplied, and there are fair quantfties of most root vegetables. Full pens were offered at to-day's poultry auction. Cockerels and heavy hens are. still the cause of brisk competition. There is a decrease in value for lightbreed hens, owing to the large numbers available. Bucks and drakes are still plentiful. Pigs are being offered in numbers above the average.
