TALISKER CAPTURES HANDICAP LADY QUEX AT A PRICE ' (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Beautiful weather favoured the Otaki Maori Racing Club for the opening day of its summer meeting. Fields were big and the racing excellent, and the size of the fields accounted for some of the surprises. There were two big dividends, the biggest being that paid by Rash, who ran second in the Hurdles and would have paid well on toward a century to win. The next biggest was that of Lady Quex, who paid an astonishing dividend in the hack six furlongs event. Talisker won the Cup very easily, farther emphasising his improvement. Keddar won the sprint in great style after being apparently hopelessly placed at the home turn. The totalisator handled £14,769 10s, against £12,901 10s last year. The Hurdles Palmerston enthusiasts said Novar was almost unbeatable in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles. He had no hurdle form to recommend him, but his supporters were right. A ragged dispatch saw Rash jump to the front from Ripdale, Diana’s Lad, Kilia and Horomea, the leader being well clear of his field passing through the straight. Going along the back Novar commenced to make up his leeway, and crossing the top was in close attendance on Rash, with Dianas’ Lad, Grand National, Red Bank and Horomea in behind. Novar took command at the last fence, where Horomea lodged a claim, only to lose her rider at the jump, and the Awapuni representative went on to win comfortably by three lengths from the little-fancied Rash, with Grand National half a length back. Red Bank was a close fourth, with Ripdale, Diana’s Lad and Panorama next to finish. Novar won so easily that he should soon win again. Maiden Plate Seven defections left a field of 21 runners to go to the post in the Maiden Plate, in which Chief Singer (£545), who had drawn the rails, was a very warm order in the betting, Chopin (£178) and Greenfield (£ 128) being next in request. Backers of the favourite were not perturbed at any stage of the journey, for, hopping out smartly, Chief Singer was on terms with Kentish Lady going down the back, with Shot Silk, Cloyne, Star Girl, Chopin and Moutoa Fume together. The positions did not undergo any change crossing the top, and in the run down the straight the favourite was never seriously challenged, going on to win nicely by a length and a-half from Cloyne, who was two lengths clear of Chopin. Shot Silk was fourth, with Kentish Lady and Green Field next to finish, the others being well bunched. The winner did her work very easily and seems a fair sort, while Cloyne ran a great .race and can be marked down for a maiden shortly. Star Girl showed a lot of pace, and so did Moutoa Fume. Katihiku Hack Rory Mor was a good favourite for the Katihiku Hack Handicap.» Maui was first out, but quickly gave way to Royal Acre, Green Acre, Elysianor, Toper© and King Quex. Crossing the top G.reen Acre was two lengths clear of Royal Acre, Rory Mor, Topere, Maui and King Quex, but -at the straight entrance Green Acre and Rory Mor ran wide, enabling Maui to come through, and the Arrowsmith gelding drew clear in the run home to win by two lengths from the littlefancied Royal Acre, with the fast.finishing Discourse in third berth half a length back. Topere was fourth, with Rory Mor, Elysianor and Acred next. Discourse finished well from a long way back, and Royal Acre and Rory Mor covered a lot of ground on the home turn. Ling Memorial The field for the big event was reduced to nine runners, the public installing the Levin Cup winner, Talisker, a hot favourite. Avro and Imperial Spark were next in the market. Kilperon, from the extreme outside position, was smartest to begin, from Talisker, Avro and Shining Armour, and passing the stands Kilperon was just clear of Avro, with Talisker striding along ahead of Black Mint, Twijik and Kilmezzo. Half a mile from home Avro ran up to Kilperon, while the favourite commenced to make up his leeway. Imperial Spark also endeavouring to improve 1 his position, but could not reach the leaders. At the top of the straight ' Kilperon compounded, whereas Talisker ran up to Avro and was never pressed to win by two lengths from ; Avro. Shining Armour came fast to j get to within half a length of Avro, - with Royal Mint and Black Mint also - beating Kilperon home. , Talisker was going like a winner all j
head, with Richfield, The Dove and Holus Bolus in a rough line. Lady Quex began well from wide out, and was going away at the finish. Rameses was unlucky not to be second, and Veronese struck a little trouble in the running. Waitawa Handicap The smallest field for the day was produced in the Waitawa Handicap. Callanmore was preferred to his fellow Awapuni candidate, Keddar, with Helotis almost as well backed. Helotis was the first to break the line, Dobbin, Royal • Duke, Callanmore and Arch Arrow being well clear of Keddar, but approaching the straight entrance Keddar improved his position. Helotis was still in the van as they straightened out, Dobbin, Royal Duke and Kilbronsyth heading Arch Arrow and Callanmore. The favourite failed to go on with it, whereas Keddar put in a long sustained run to gradually overhaul the leaders and win by a good half-length. Kilbronsyth likewise outstayed Helotis, taking second placing by a head, with Callanmore, Royal Duke and Dobbin next. Keddar put up a remarkable performance to win. Taumanuka Handicap Tcheka paid a good price when he won the Taumanuka Hack Handicap, for which Home Made was installed favourite. Tcheka was rushed co the front to assume the lead going away from home, Gasnapper* Bissac and Skyrider being in close attendance. Going along the back Lady Alophen ran up to the leader, but Tanagra wfas taken to the front to lead across the top from Tcheka, Gasnapper, Kalos and Skyrider. Tcheka was first to land into the straight, and under pressure the Night Raid gelding retained a length advantage to the post, Skyrider hanging on to take second money by a nead from Metellus, with Gasnapper and Kalos right up. was unlucky and might do
better if he meets similar company Kereihi Roera Handicap There was another big- field in the Kereihi Roera Handicap. Epistle and ■Vigilance, who were bracketed, were favourites, and there was big support for Bonogne and Joy Bird. Deluge, Modern and Vigilance led Joy Bird to the straight, where Joy Bird hit the front and hung on long enough to win by a* head from Bonhomme, with Modern another head away and Huikai foui-th.
