METHODIST SYNOD

REPORTS PRESENTED The Methodist Church District Synod opened at the Pitt Street Church yesterday morning. The Rev. W. J. Elliott was in the chair. Votes of condolence were passed to Mrs. H. P. Caughey and family, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Caughey, Mrs. D. J. Murray and the Rev. W. J. Williams. Feeling reference was made to the work and personality of the late Rev. D. J. Murray. Statistical returns showed there were 86 churches and 156 other preaching-places in the district, staffed by 44 ministers, 18 home missionaries and 147 local preachers. The membership was:—Senior, 4.664; junior, 1,378; infants, 722. Attendants at public worship, 15,226. The figures showed a general increase. Dr. Ranston presented recommendations from the Spiritual Advance Committee, suggesting methods of reviving and fostering vital personal experience of religion. The synod reaffirmed its previous endorsements of the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill and also of the principle of Prohibition, concerning which there could be no going back. Stress was, laid upon the need for more thorough educational temperance work.

A social gathering ‘in connection with the synod was held last evening.
