SUNDAY DANCES AND HAKAS
DISAPPROVAL BY SOUTHERN SYNOD (Special to THE SUEJ DUNEDIN, "Wednesday. An exhibition of poi dances and hakas was given by a party of Maoris at Quarantine Island on Sunday to entertain members of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition and visitors. The Otago and Southland Methodist Synod to-day passed a strong resolution condemning the display as unworthy of Europeans in commercialising the Maoris, and calling on the Government department controlling the island to prevent any further desecration of the Sabbath. It was said that such displays were not permitted even at Rotorua. Unless a strong protest were made the time would come when Maoris would be brought to the city beaches on Sundays for the entertainment of the public.
