DRIYE OR DRINK?
ELECTRICIAN’S CHOICE FOUND DRUNK IN CAR William Butterfield was given a choice this morning between taking out a prohibition order and having his driving licence taken from him. He decided against drink. Butterfield, an electrician aged 32, was charged at the Police Court this morning with being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. Constable Mawhinney saw Butterfield asleep over the wheel of his car in the Great North Road last evening. Another man, who had been fined this morning for drunkenness, roused the leeping man with difficulty. Butterfield tried to start the car, and the constable intervened. *‘l told him to get out of the car,” he said, “and walk along the footpath. He staggered and nearly fell, so I took him along to the police station.” The constable in charge of the watch-house thought that Butterfield was drunk enough to be arrested as a pedestrian, even had he not been in charge of Butterfield then decided to alter his original plea of not guilty and admit the offence. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Good: by doing that he has reduced his fine by £lO. It was stated that Butterfield bad taken a few whiskys to relieve his sufferings from malaria. After being given the choice. Butterfield was ordered to take out a prohibition order. His was endorsed and he was fined £ls.
