THE NEW PARLIAMENT
Reform 28: United 27: Labour 19
SiR JOHN LUKE DEFEATED
United Holds Auckland East
By the loss of Wellington North, where Sir John Luke has been replaced in the final count by Mr. C. H. Chapman (Labour), the Government has lost another seat. In Dunedin South, where Mr. R. W. Hall previously led, the official count has also brought about another change in the doubtful seats, Mr. W. B. Taverner winning the seat for the United Party by a majority of 33. The United Party also now decisively holds Auckland East, Mr. J. B. Donald having a majority of 37 in the official recount. With two doubtful seats provisionally credited to the leading candidates, the state of the parties is: Government 28, United 27, Labour 19.
i r J'HE position of the parties as shown by the official counts completed is as follow, their relative strength at the dissolution being shown by the figures in parentheses: Reform 28 (53) United . . 27 (11) Labour 19 (14) Country 1 ( —) Independent 5 (2) The doubtful seats have now been reduced to two. In the list given below Government candidates are denoted by R, United by U„ Labour by L and Country by C: —- Votes Leading. Major- to ity. Come. Bay of Islds. Rushworth (C) S2 350 Temuka .... Burnett (R) . 70 220 SOUTHERN CHANGES With a lead of only 8 votes over his opponent and 1,138 votes to come, it was generally realised that Sir John Luke had a very precarious hold over Wellington North. Previously Mr. Chapman had a majority of 60, but it was subsequently discovered that a parcel of 34 votes had been wrongly credited to him. The final figures are: C. H. Chapman (L) 5,609 Sir John Luke (R) 5,563 Informal 263 Majority for Chapman: 46. Sir John Luke has represented the electorate since 1908. The defeat of Mr. R. W. Hall (Labour) who was leading Mr. Taverner in Dunedin South by eight votes, with 828 absentees to come, has given another seat to United. Although it was expected by many that the absentee and seamen’s votes would give sl final majority for Labour, the result is consistent with the previous history of the electorate, Mr. T. K. Sidey having held the seat first as a Liberal and later as a Nationalist for 27 years. The final figures are: W. B. Taverner (U) .. .. 4,462 R. W. Hall (L) 4,429 C. Todd (R) 2,205 ' Majority for Taverner: 33. THE NEW PARLIAMENT The new Parliament now is as follows, showing the leading candidates as returned in the doubtful seats: REFORM (28). A. Evans. Two months are allowed for this and non-compliance with the law renders them liable to prosecution. Electors who have resided in New Zealand for one year and have moved from one electorate to another, but have not yet registered in their new electoral district, are qualified to apply for registration upon completion of three months’ residence therein. Failure to register within one month therafter is an offence punishable by fine. RICCARTON SEAT POSSIBILITY OF PETITION Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Although no action has yet been decided upon, there is a possibility that a petition may be lodged against the election of Mr. H. S. S. Kyle for the Riccarton seat, on the ground that certain voters were wrongly enrolled in the Riccarton electorate. Mr. McLachlan’s committee is considering the matter. Mr. Kyle’s majority at the final count was 45, the figures being: H. S.S. Kyle (R.), 4,515, A. A. McLachlan (U-), 4,470 G. H. Thompson (L.), 1,671.
