BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council held its usual meeting last evening, the Mayor. Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. Mr. E. C. Gage, district telegraph engineer, in reply to the council’s request to move the public slot phone nearer to the post office off the footpath, said the box is now situated in the best position in the locality. It was the usual practice to locate public telephones in as conspicuous a position ns possible. It was decided to renew the request t<> have the box removed to the department's own property in front of the post office. rt was agreed to receive accounts for the Waitemata Power Board on a commission basis of 1} per cent. The Main Highways Board notified that the subsidy for the penetration work In Onewa Road, estimated to cose £177 10s. would be £1 for £l. A taxi and omnibus licence was granted to Mr. T). Carson, on the condition that he submits a full time-table and insurance policy similar to those of other licensees. Cr. Moller and Cr. Jasper opposed the application. Four permits for new buildings were granted. Sitting as a Domain Board, the control of Kauri Park Reserve of 110 acres was taken over and the Parks Committee was requested to make an inspection of the area, and report concerning the condition of the building on it. The provisional secretary, Mr. A. M. Pickford, of the proposed Birkenhead Golf Club, wrote .stating that at a meeting on Tuesday it was deckled to approach the board with a view to securing a suitable area for a golf course. He suggested a long lease with a pepperco**n rental of land in the Birkenhead Donfain It was decided to grant the club a lease for 21 years of a suitable area of the Domain at a yearly rental of £1 Is, the club to pay any Waitemata County rates
