AKARANA YACHT CLUB

NEW BOATHOUSE OPENED YACHTING AND THE NATION Although to some the Akarana Yacht Club’s new clubhouse is a little out of the way of easy access, it was pointed out at the official opening ceremony last evening that, in building where it did, the club has made rather a strategic move. Situated at Campbell’s Point, Akarana will bo the nearest yacht club to the extensive residential area at Orakei. and it is practically certain that the club will therefore add j greatly to its already large roll of | 400 members. j In tht* absence at Wellington of Mr. jM. H. Wynyard, deputy-chairman of the Harbour Board, the opening was performed by .Mr. T. 13. Clay, a member of the board. The commodore. Mr. T. U. McKay, presided. He referred to the importance in time of war of the nautical training received by yachtsmen in Auckland clubs, and the general physical and moral betterment to be gained by the youth of Auckland from membership of yacht clubs. It was 34 years since the club had been formed, as the North Shore Yacht Club, on the North Shore, later crossing over to the city side, where it had been for some seven or eight years without a settled home. They had now a building of which they could be proud. It had been erected by voluntary labour, and members had taken up debentures to help provide the necessary funds. A short musical programme was presented by several members of the Rev. Jasper Calder’s Company, after which supper was served downstairs and the hall was cleared for dancing. Many representatives of other clubs were present, and also Mr. O. Muller, chairman of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association.
