“REVOLTING CRUETY”
BOBBY-CALF INDUSTRY REVIEWED SOCIETY SUMS UP TRADE The committee of the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is satisfied that cruelty of a revolting nature is attached to the “bobby calf” trade. Pointed reference to the industry is made in the society’s annual report, to bo presented at to-morrow evening’s meeting. The report describes the handling of the young calves in detail, and adds that the society’s inspector followed the industry right through from the farmer to the works. “The committee is in possession of detailed information,” continues the report. “It is true that, as a result of the society’s investigations, the Government made regulations, which are on the whole being fairly observed, but much remains to be done to reduce cruelty to a minimum. “The committee is asking for a conference of representatives of various sides of # tho trade, with a view to framing regulations to prevent the gross cruelty which has existed in some cases.”
