Bright Touches at Epsom
Simple Frocks the Rule
The Back’s the Thing
| Brighter in patches than it was on Saturday, the dressing of the fair racegoers at Epsom to-day, when the Otahuhu Trotting Club concluded its spring meeting, was still of a much darker order than one would have expected the sunny day to inspire. Again there was an amazing predominance of black and navy blue. Beige showed up fairly well, and the rose shades had their adherents, but it was not at all unusual to see a procession of twenty or more women pass by, all funereally barged in black, with small black hats to match. Tlie eye welcomed the splashes of colour in the sombre ensemble, and those who celebrated the close of the meeting in the conviviality of smart gowns of pastel shades, or added a vivid top to their sad toilettes, were indeed public benefactors. The only important style discovery that seemed to have been generally found out was that it is the back of fashion that matters most at tlie moment. Decoration, when used at all, was applied to the backs of frocks and coats, in the form .of panels, tucks —embroidery and bows. Scarves, too, followed the backward trend, and were more often knotted at the back of the neck than in front or at' the side.
