MANY FIRES YESTERDAY

BUSY AFTERNOON FOR BRIGADES PONSONBY HOUSE DAMAGED Yesterday afternoon the various fire brigades round Auckland were kept busy answering calls. Three of them were answered by the City and Western Districts Brigades, and the fourth by the Mount Albert Brigade. There were also two grass fires during the day, which were attended to by the Tamaki Brigade. The most serious fire occurred in a wooden house at 27 Ponsonby Terrace, which is owned by Mr. H. Chamberlain, of Edendale, and occupied by Mr. T. S. Stiers. The house was badly damaged, two rooms being gutted before the City and Western Districts Brigades could put out the flames. Nothing of the contents was insured. About 3 o’clock in the afternoon an overheated bearing, in a flock-making machine in Taitersfield’s factory at Grey Lynn, caused a fire which destroyed several bales of flock. The City and Western Brigades answered the call, and the building was not damaged. In the evening a small fire broke out at Mobberley’s bowser station in Kingsland, when the tank of a motorcycle was being filled. It is thought that the fire was caused by fumes from the petrol reaching the acetylene lamp on the machine. The cycle and the petrol-delivery pipe were slightly damaged before the Mount Albert Brigade could put the fire out with chemicals. An underground cable fused at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Hepburn Street later in the evening, causing a small fire. This was quickly extinguished by the City and Western Brigades. Of the two grass fires which occurred yesterday, one was at the Strand, St. Heliers, and the other on the Glendowie Estate. Both were put out by the Tamaki Brigade before much damage had been done.
