NEW WATER SUPPLY
MANUKAU COUNTY’S EFFORTS BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION The engineer, Mr. J. Page, reported to the Manukau County Council at its meeting to-day that the investigation for a new water supply at Mangere Mountain had been P ro “ ceeding but water had not been tapped in sufficient quantity for the purpose sought. It was not anticipated that such results would be obtained at the pcresent stage of sinking, which was between the 50ft and 60ft level. The original contract had been terminated and. the work was being carried on by coianty workmen. A large amount of the staff’s time had been occupied in preparing and submitting proposals and contracts for the Public Works Department and Higlxways Board grants expenditure. A contract for the regrading and widening of a portion of the Papatoe-toe-Howick main highway and contracts for the reconstruction of Bull’s Bridge and Ward’s Bridge in the Wuiroa Kidling had been let. Tenders had been called for the construction of the new Biro Stream Bridge in the same riding, and as no acceptable tender had been re-reived far the work on Driving Creek Bridge other steps were being taken to carry out the bridge construction.
The inspector reported that 20 applications involving a total amount of £10,405 hail been received for the erection oC dwellings and other buildings and to carry out alterations. The Mafiji Highways Board wrote advising th«e payment of £286 9s 2d to the credit of the council’s account to be allocated as follows-; Pakuranga Riding, £12?7 6s Id; Papakura Riding, £66 17s 3dp Papatoetoe Riding, £27 11s 3d; Turanga Riding, £8 18s 3d; Wairoa Riding, £55 16s 4d.
