NEW PLAYING AREAS

WORK AT ONEHUNGA The Reserves Committee of the Onehunga Borough Council reported at last evening’s meeting of the council that the work of improving the recreation reserve was proceeding satisfactorily. A gang of between 30 and 40 ex-soldiers had prepared three new playing areas and two more should be completed next week. The Auckland Hockey Association forwarded a donation of £lO toward this work and notified that should the council allot it two grounds next season it would be prepared to donate a further sum of £ls. The question as to whether the required space would be available was held over for three months. The borough solicitors wrote suggesting that Air. J. Dawson’s claim of £4OO for engineering services be referred to arbitration. The council, however, decided that unless Mr. Dawson accepted the council’s offer of £75, the claim would be contested in the Courts. The Telegraph Department drew* attention to the accidental damage done to underground telephone cables by contractors and others when excavating for sewer anck watermain connections, and suggested that in future all permits issued to drain-layers and others should include a clause emphasising the necessity for examining the telephone cables and duct plans before commencing any work which might interfere with the telephone system.—The suggestion was adopted. The Auckland Gas Company undertook when laying mains across roads to obviate damage to new roads as far as possible, ;ind that where the cost was not prohibitive to place the pipes under the footpaths on both sides of the streets; also where it is possible they will in future bore under the roads rather than break up the surfaces. Permission was granted the Onehunga Amusements, Ltd., to show pictures in the Strand Theatre- on Christmas night. The periodical analysis of the borough water supply disclosed a trace of free chlorine in the sample taken from the Te Papapa pumping station. In other respects the water was satisfactory. The District Fund account is £3.142 in debit. The sum of £239 is in hand in the drainage advances loans account and the watermains loan account is £3S9 in credit. Accounts amounting to £2,429 were passed for payment.
