FIRE IN GRAIN MILL

bu,ldin £aM NTWs GOOD SAVE BY BRIGADE A three-storey grain mill , Theatre Lane, behind his Majesty’s Theatre, was damaged by fi re on Sunday afternoon. A prompt alarm brought the City Brigade on the scene in quick time and a good save was effected. The brick and iron building, which is owned by Mr. Arthur Bach, licensee of the Metropolitan Hotel, and occupied by Mr. F. W. Smith, of Crescent, was used as a mill for ih* manufacture of poultry and stock f«*ed. and machinery as well as a quantity of stock was damaged by fire an* water. Two boys saw smoke coming through the windows and telephoned the tire brigade. By the time the brigadj had arrived the fire, which had appa r . ently started in a front room on ifc* ground floor, was threatening the two upper storeys. The flames escape through a broken window and ignite a two-storey annexe of wood and iron which stands between the mill and a warehouse, causing considerable damage.

The brigade lost no time and, w'Uk the aid of chemicals as well as wateethe fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. The prompt action of tj* boys in giving the alarm saved the mill from greater damage. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is thought that spontaneous combustion was t 0 blame. No one had visited the pre» mises since Saturday. The building is insured in the Phoenix Assurance Company for and the contents in the Queensland Office for £2,050. PAPAKURA FIRE HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED At an early hour on Saturday morning a five-roomed wooden house in Dominion Road, Papakura, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was outside the town boundary, and in the absence of g water supply was burned to tht ground. The only occupant was Mr. Houghten, whose brother, Mr. C. H. Hough ten. owned the house, and lit escaped through the window. was little furniture in the building, but a number of personal effects were destroyed.

The house was insured in the Soutk British Office for t‘ 4<>o.
