MAORI BOYS RUN WILD
CRIMES AT KAITAIA BORSTAL TERM FOR TWO Two young Maoris, Percy Hogger and Herewini Heka, who had pleaded guilty at Kaitaia to two charges of breaking, entering and theft and one of arson, were both sent to the Borstal Institute for two years by Mr. Justice Frazer in the Supreme Court this morning. “It appears that although there are no previous convictions against you, this is a case where probation would hardly be desirable,” said his Honour in passing sentence. Hogger seemed to be the leader, and the other lad was apparently easily led. Their offences were somewhat serious and the boys appeared not to understand the significance of their action. Both had obviously gone wild. “I am willing to make allowance for the fact that your early training was not as good as it might have been, but I think it would be mistaken kindness to grant probation,” his Honour concluded.
