DROWNING AT MERCER

INQUEST ON MAORI’S DEATH (From Our Own Com'espondent) MERCER, Saturday. Yesterday the district coroner, Mr. C. K. Laurie, held an inquest on the death by drowning of a Maori, Haki Hepi, whose body was recovered from the Waikato River yesterday. Haki Hepi, according to the evidence, was crossing the river to Mercer in a canoe with a friend named Whistle. The river was rough and there was a strong wind blowing up stream. When about half-way across a large wave hit the canoe, which went under, leaving both men swimming for their lives. Whistle managed to reach shallow water, but Haki Hepi, although he was a strong swimmer, sank about half a chain away. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
