AT GREEN LANE
CONGREGATIONAL ANNIVERSARY OPTIMISM FOR PROHIBITIONISTS After two very successful entertainments held during the week, the Sunday School Anniversary celebrations in connection with the Green Lane Congregational Church were concluded yesterday. The Rev. Harry Johnson preached in the morning and held the attention of the children as he drew lessons from the work of divers. In the afternoon prizes and certificates were presented to a considerable number of the scholars.
The school has 200 boys and girls on the roll, and the establishment of an Intermediate Club during the year was an outstanding feature of the annual report which was read by the secretary Mr. Lyon. Many have commented upon the excellent singing of this year’s anniversary hymns by the children, whose success is due to the training by Mr. H. Wakelin, the choirmaster. At the evening service the Rev. A. W. McMillan, referring to the week’s vote upon the licensing issue, declared that, considering the fabulous sums expended by and the frantic efforts made by the “Continuance” propagandists, the fact that there are still 40 per cent, of the voters declared undeceived Prohibitionists is a matter for congratulation. We are likely to see an even “drier” Parliament in 1929, and the 50 per cent, of the voters who are in favour of Continuance have proved very costly. The outlook is decidedly hopeful for temperance advocates.
