SYDNEY GANGS FOLLOW CHICAGO EXAMPLE
FIVE YEARS’ GAOL FOR CRIMINALWITNESS THREATENED Received Noon. SYDNEY, To-day. William Smiley, aged 26, was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for causing bodily harm to two men. The prisoner, who is a “razor-gang-ster,” is described as a dangerous criminal. It is also stated that the gang endeavoured to prevent the principal Crown witness from appearing, and threatened to blow up the house where he resided, necessitating police protection for the house, which already has been damaged by a party of intruders while the witness was away at the preliminary court proceedings. He has now removed, with his family, to an undisclosed address. In the meantime, the witness has had special plain-clothes protectors, while proceeding to and from work.
