LATE MR. H. P. R. CAUGHEY
FUNERAL AT HILLSBOROUGH Prominent public men in Auckland and representatives of leading- business firms, educational and church societies, were present at the funeral of Mr. Hugh Price Rainger Caughey, of the firm of Smith and Caughey, Ltd., at the Hillsborough Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The Rev. E. Drake conducted a short service at the home and was assisted f
by the Rev. G. Bond and the Rev. \V. J. Elliott, president of the Methodist! ; Conference. Mr. Drake also conducted tht? service at the graveside and spoke of Mr. Caughey’s generosity and the good he had done during his short lifetime At the graveside were members of i the late Mr. Caughey’s family. Mr. A. C. Caughey, his father, Messrs. J. M . I<. J. and A. L. Caughey, his brothers, : and Mr. 11. Blackwell, brother-in-law. There were also members of his wife's j family, Mr. A. W. Page, his father-in-i law, and Messrs. Arthur, H. R. and 11. 11. Page, and Mrs. W. H. Smith and Mr. I R. Smith, of the firm with which Mr. i Caughey was associated. Also at the ’ graveside were Sir James Gunson, Mr. George Wins tone, sen.. Mr. George Winstone. jun.» Mr. Frank Winstone. : the Rev. Dr. C. 11. Laws and the Rev. j Dr. H. Ranston. The Auckland Chami her of Commerce, of which Mr. Caughey ! was a member. represented by the president, Mr. 11. Merritt and past j presidents, Mr. 11. AV. Hudson (who is i also a past president of the Associated j ; Chambers of Commerce), Air. F. A. ; Hcllaby and Air. A. G. Lunn. Memj bers of the executive also present were : Air. A. AT. Seaman, Air. W. A. Phillips | and Dr. E P. Neale, secretary. In the funeral procession to Hills- | borough there was a large number of j motor-cars. There was also a great j display of wreaths, including those from • the staff of Smith and Caughey, Ltd., the Plunket Society, the Karitane ! Home, Wesley College, Paerata, Epsom ; Methodist Home the East Methodist i Circuit, Ring’s College Old Boys' Asso- ; i ciation, the Pacific Club, Interhouse I Girls’ Sports Association, Drapers, I Clothiers and Boot Retailers’ Association, and the various warehouses and retail houses in the city. In order to enable the staff to attend the funeral the premises of Smith and Caughey. Ltd., were closed during the afternoon and a large number of the employees went to Hillsborough. The firm’s buyers acted as the pall-bearers.
