Travis Axworthy’s Impressive Display
THE spring carnival of the Otahuhu Trotting Club opened at Alexandra Park to-day under excellent conditions. The weather was ideal, attracting a large attendance. The track was in splendid order. Results: —

Times: 3.37 3-5, 3.30 4-5, *3.35 2-5. The opening contest was a poor affair. Colonel Thorpe (£479) was the favourite, with a little money also on hand for Royal Bob (£377), Great Way (£322), Direct Action (£269) and Gold Sovereign (£245). Great Way and Royal Bob went away badly, and later in the first circuit Colonel Thorpe and Direct Action also got up. Golden Huia led away from Colonel Thorpe, Great Way, Direct Action, and Billy Carbine. At the end of the first circuit Direct "Way was four lengths in front of Great Way, with another eight lengths back to Billy Carbine, Colonel Thorpe, Golden Huia, and Gold Sovereign, who skipped here. Direct Action and Great Way drew out along the back, but the former got up, to settle down quickly and lead into the straight :rom Great Way, Golden Sovereign, and Billy Carbine. Great Way got up again in the straight, and it was left to Gold Sovereign to push Direct Action to half a length. Billy Carbine was three lengths back third, and Great Way fourth. A big field of 20 came out for the Mangere Handicap, and Travis Ax-, worthy £927 was made a short order, with St. Bridget £584 and Trustworthy £494 the only others backed. It wasn’t a race, for the favourite hit the front inside a couple of furlongs and stayed there. At the start Gold Circle and Nella Dillon failed to go off, TJrsuline leading down the back from Lord Lu, Travis Axworthy, Halgana and Warplane. Travis Axworthy went to the front crossing the top and led past the stands clear of Halgana and Warplane, with St. Bridget, Trustworthy (off the course), Horizon, Marionette and Lord Lu in close order. Travis Axworthy led along the back and into the home stretch again from St. Bridget, Horizon, Halgana, Warplane, Marionette. Peter Grattan and Trustworthy, and went on to score convincingly by three parts of a length from Horizon, who got up on the post, to beat St. Bridget, who broke, by a clear length for second money. Halgana was fourth, and the next were Marionette, Warpiane, Peter Grattan, Profiteer, Red Stair and Trustworthy. The winner’s price was short, but Horizon carried only £35 and paid well over a score for second. ONEHUNGA HANDICAP Of £350; 2 miles; limit 4.38 2— LAPLANDER (C. All six acceptors started, • and Free Advice £1,642 and Laplander £1,541 monopolised the betting, and they were all out to catch Gold Dial at the post, and just managed it. Lord Nepean was first out and he led past the stands the first time from Gold Dial, Laplander, Free Advice. Dick Dillon and Taipare. a dozen lengths separating the field. The order was much the same, with Taipare fifth, nine lengths separating them. Taipare broke crossing the top and Gold Dial led to the straight from
Laplander, Lord Nepean, Free Advice and Dick Dillon. Gold Dial, Free Advice and Laplander had a great tussle over the last 100 yards, Laplander gaining a half-head decision over Free Advice, with Gold Dial a neck away. There was five lengths back to Dick Dillon, with the other pair a long way back. An inquiry is being held into a complaint of interference with Free Advice by Laplander. All but Western King faced the starter for the big event, and the trio bracketed Native Prince, Jackie Audubon and Jewel Pointer—was always favourite with £1,756, while there was good backing for Loch Moigh £940, and Mate o’ Mine £1.037, with Gold Jacket entrusted with £926. The Shrew tangled and lost a lot of ground. Mate ’o Mine was the early leader, and passing the stands the first time was attended by Billy Sea, Native Prince, Loch Moigh, The Shrew, Jackie Audubon, Gold Jacket and Jewel Pointer, not a great deal separating the field. Mate o’ Mine was still in command over the next lap, and in the straight again Billy Sea, Native Prince, Loch Moigh, The Shrew, Gold Jacket, Jackie Audubon and Jewel Pointer, the field being fairly well bunched. Along the back the whole eight were in close order. Native Prince was first to turn for home, from Gold Jacket, The Shrew, Jackie Audubon, Jewel Pointer and Billy Sea, hnd in a fine finish Native Prince won by a long neck from Gold Jacket, with Jackie Audubon a length away, third, %:hree parts of a length in front of Billy Sea.
