Following the stabbing of an Australian by an Italian during an encounter 100 infuriated men chased three Italians through North Melbourne, and were about to storm the house where the Italians had taken refuge when the police arrived. The victim of the stabbing, Thomas Carr, aged 24, received a gash on the face. The police in North and West Melbourne are apprehensive of serious racial trouble. There was a disturbance yesterday afternoon among some waterside workers who were unloading sugar from a vessel at Yarraville, a riverside suburb of Melbourne. A volunteer worker, who had a permit to carry a revolver, shot a man named Conron in the groin. Further shots w r ere subsequently fired. Conron is now in hospital. He refuses to say anything about the affair.
