LABOURER FINED £5 Thefts from the City Markets are difficult to detect, according to Chief - Detective Hammond, bqt William James Gibson was caught red-handed yesterday. This morning Gibson, a labourer, aged 44, pleaded guilty to the theft of a bag of potatoes from the market. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Gibson was seen carrying the potatoes across the road to a shingle yard. When Accosted, he had told the old story of meeting a stranger and getting the goods from him. Gibson: I l live a crippled mother to support. Drink is the cause of the trouble. “You can’t carry a sack of potatoes when you are drunk,” remarked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., an he fined Gibson £6, in default one month’s imprisonment.
