PLAZA AND TIVOLI
TWO GOOD COMEDIES “Good Morning, Judge,” which has opened at the Plaza and Tivoli Theatres, is a typical Reginald Denny vehicle made by Universal; it has rapid action, excellent comedy and a pleasing romantic angle. ! This time the star appears as a scion of wealth who can’t pay his fine when brought before a judge, after participating as an innocent bystander in a fight. Someone has stolen his wallet. | A beautiful mission worker who believes that hardened crooks can be reformed advances the sum. Denny falls { in love with her and, in order to be- j com© an inmate of her mission, con- ; fesses to a long list of crimes. Later, he saves her from' some of the criminals whom she thought she had reformed. She finally learns his real identity, but this doesn’t halt their romance. “Good Morning, Judge,” is the best picture the star has made. Mao’ 1 Nolan plays opposite Denny and Dorothy Gulliver, beautiful heroine of the “Collegians,” has a prominent role. The hundreds of laughs are partly due to Otis Harlan. In the role of an unshaven crook, whose specialty is getting in free to prize fights, Harlan demonstrates a superb skill at comedy. Denny, by himself, however, provided enough funny scenes for an ordinary picture. Intimate revelations of the inner workings of play production is the theme of the picture rejoicing in the somewhat expressive title of* “The Butter and Egg Man.” which was also shown. A “butter and egg” man would | appear to be a country lad as simple as his farm products. Jack Mulhall plays well as the smalltown Simpleton who buys a theatrical “flop,” puts it over, thanks to a bit of luck, and then outsßcks the city slickers by selling it back to them. After seeing Mulhall as “The Butter and Egg Man,” it is hard to imagine any other actor doing the role as well. Opposite him Greta Xissen, Swedish beauty. scores sharply with fiery blonde charm and real histrionic ability. A strong and varied programme was also presented. j
