RIALTO, AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE WHEEL OF CHANCE” “The Cossacks,” to be shown again this evening at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres, is a mighty drama of horses, fighting and drinking. Still, through it runs the sweetest love story in the world —the romance of a boy and a girl tossed hither and thither by the resistless tide of affairs. Gilbert, as the swashbuckling Cossack soldier on the Russian steppes, is dramatic, dashing and appealing. Miss Adoree is charming as a peasant girl. Ernest Torrence, as the stern old Cossack chieftain, is a figure of compelling power. Cossacks, brought from Europe, stage sensational rides in the picturesque garb of their race; gigantic settings, including a whole Russian town, hundreds of people in the colourful garb of Russia, form a background of kaleidoscopic beauty. Sensational rides and battles, grim torture, and the struggles of strong men in battle blend into a massive accompaniment to an idyllic romance. Richard Barthelmess in “The Wheel of Chance”is the second feature.
