FANCIES FOR LEVIN

(Special to THE SUN)

PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. While overhead conditions were excellent on Tuesday morning, local candidates for Levin, particularly those who worked before breakfast were not so favoured underfoot, there’ being a certain amount of surface water along the back of the cotirse. The flags were some 35 feet out. ✓ Reed > had Home Made (Mellis) as a companion over seven furlongs, negotiated in 1.40. The 1924 New Zealand Cup winner appears to be a likely proposition for an early stake over the battens, for he jumps

Kilia, a stable companion of Sunart’s, and who likewise figures in the Manukau Hurdles at Levin, had Red Bank as a partner over six furlongs, run in 1.27. Kilia has shown some promise in the department, but Sunar. should have his measure. Red Bank, who is assuming racing shape, will be a runner at Otaki the following Wednesday. At the October meeting of the Otaki Club Red Bank ran a second to Sir Moment on the concluding day The Warplane gelding Wyeford. who will essay Maiden honours at Levin, had another Warplane representative in Cold Air as a companion over five furlongs, and the maiden held on to the Mako Mako Handicap runner throughout. The former has not been up a great’ time, and he will not be able to hold the better seasoned Tol*ere, Tcheka and Teremoana. Gallops Well

Holus Bolus, with a light boy up, ran home from the four furlong post in 54. If in the mood the Boniform gelding can command a good turn of speed, and he reads preferable to the other Awapuni candidates, Cold Air. Patearoa and Disrank. Patearoa may not make the trip.

Moutoa Treasury (Metcalf) got the better of Keddar (Reed) at the jump out, and the Lord Quex gelding never got on terms with the Paper Money filly thereafter, Moutoa Treasury being several lengths clear at the post after running the five furlongs in 1.8. Keddar. however, is capable of better things, although he was opposed to an undoubted speed merchant.

Inflame (Reed) does not always put his heart into his work when a companion fights him for the lead, and Moutoa Fume, a Gasbag—Moutoa’s Gift three-year-old. had his measure throughout over half a mile, run in 56. Both are down to compete at future events. Moutoa Fume being due to make her first appearance in public at Levin on Saturday. Levin Cup Pair

The two Levin Cup candidates. Novar (Reed) and Imperial Spark (Metcalf), the latter having the outside running, kept together throughout over a seven furlong journey run in 1.38. It was a good effort on the part of the pair, particularly as both prefer the top of the ground, but backers will, perforce. have to • take them largely on trust.

Elysianor (Metcalf), who ran an excellent seven furlongs at the Manawatu

Hunt fixture, had the measure of the Maiden candidate, Skyrider. at the termination of a five furlong gallop, which occupied 1.11. Both are from J. Coyle’s team, that mentor no doubt haying pleasant recollections of his visit to Levin 12 months ago, when he annexed the first three events in succession. Both horses are possibilities on the forthcoming occasion. Piuthair (R. C. Stratton) is due to make a reappearance under silk at Levin, when the daughter of Black Ada will be a in the McDonald Memorial Handicap. In a five-furlong gallop wLh the in-and-out Hymestrason Piuthair finished full of running to do the distance in 1.6 2-5. Callanmore, a stable companion, left half a mile behind in 53. Kilmiss (Pagan) jumped off at the seven-furlong post to pick up the halfsister to Ring Boy, Jiu Jazz, a furlong later, and run the last six furlongs in 1.24. Jiu Jazz is on the improve, but her turn does not appear to be yet. Kilmiss does not read a possibility in the Levin Cup, although she has surprised before. Strong Hand in Sprint Dobbin was too quick out for Patearoa in a scamper over half a mile, and although his stable companion joined issue at the straight entrance. the chestnut drew clear again to complete his task without being unduly hurried in 56|. Awapuni promises to hold a strong hand in the McDonald Memorial with Dobbin, Moutoa Treasury, Keddar and Piuthair. The Absurd gelding Roburant (C. Robinson) was sent a round over the battens, the chestnut giving a vastlyimproved showing. A moody sort, he might take it into his head to go Maher’s only representatives at Levin, Kalos, alone, ran along from the six furlong post to complete his task in 1.9 for the last five furlongs. Kalos and Grand National are Miss G. Maher’s only representative at Levin, the latter racing over the battens. Ridden by Alan McDonald, Grand National had Elicit (H. Gordon) as a companion over a round of four fences. Both jumped cleanly, but the pace was not on. Chelone in Work Although .Commendation is still an absentee from the active ranks, Chelone is back in work and seems little the worse for his compulsory let-up. The Leighton gelding put plenty of heart into his exercise gallop yesterday morning. Trainer G. Jones is lop. ful that Commendation will be on deck within the course of a few days. The trip to Riccarton was a far from fruitful one to Jones and his fellowmentor, G. New. Two patrons of New’s stable disposed of horses, Mr. W. White selling Crown Area and Mr. C. T. Keeble quitting Pangolin and Pantler. While -'wn Area is a classy performer when right, he has never appeared overstrong constitutionally, but the other pair were undoubtedly on the down grade. The mentor himself also effected the purchase of Moorgas from •his patron.
