Turf Notes
Levin’s Annual Leading as it does to the Otaki and Feilding meetings, the fixture at Levin on Saturday should be a guide for later on. Racing at Winton
The Winton Club’s annual meeting is to be held to-morrow and on Saturday. Lucy Locket and Celerity 11. should fc*? in the market for the cup, the field for which is as follows: Winton Cup, of 320sovs, 1| miles: Celerity 11., 0.9; Queen Balboa, 8.7; Lucy Locket, 7.8; Overdrawn, 7.4; Bilbo, 7.4; Apache, 7.0. In the Winton Steeplechase, Jovial, top weight with 11.8, should run out the 2J miles. The Tradesmen’s Handicap, one mile, will see King Balboa, top with 9.0, in the market. Riding at Te Kuiti A few riding engagements already made for the Te Kuiti meeting on Saturday week are: R. McTavish, High Pitch, Brampton, Bombarder and probably King Peg; J. Cammick, The Lover and Valroe; H. Dulieu, Star of the East; J. Burgess, Soami; and R. Syme, Farndon. Short Odds Australian files to hand to-day state that Statesman was at sixteens for the Melbourne Cup last June in IG, two prominent backers having got busy just then. The longest price about the two cups double. Maple—Statesman, was 500 to 1. Has Done Well The Lover has thrived on the useful work given him since the recent Palmranga meeting, and indications poini to him stripping a very fit horse for the Te Kuiti Cup on Saturday week. When The Lover beat a hack field pointless at the Pakuranga fixture he had only been up six weeks, and having materially benefited since then he is likely to go a stinging good race. 1-le will be ridden by J. Cammick, who has been enjoying a successful run lately. Handy for Victoria? Handy is now enjoying a holiday at Paki Paki (noted for its meat works and Maori pahs). Some holiday resort! It is on the cards that the ’chaser will be taken to Melbourne for summer steepleehasing. Auckland Cup Considerable interest is being taken in the handicaps for the Auckland Cup, which are due to appear on Monday, December 3. With the form now exposed as much as it ever will be by Boxing Day, no doubt the Amateur weight adjusters will be busy. In view of the interest being taken in the event, the amateur handicappers are invited to frame what they consider the weights will be and send them along to “Early Bird,” of The Sun, for publication. For their guidance it is pointed out that the minimum weight is 7.0, but the maximum is to be at the handicapper’s discretion. The entries are as follow:
AUCKLAND CUP, of £3,000; 2 miles. —Tidal, Eh Timi, Rapier, Oratrix, Concentrate, Pink Note, Blimp, Vertigern. David Garrick, Talisker, Desert Glow, Thursby, Corinax, Bisox, Footfall, Philippic, Transformer, Beacon Light, Valkon, Star Stranger, Star God, Starboard Light, Uoylake, Goshawk, The Hawk, Mint Leaf, Battle Colours, First Sight, Laughing Prince, Prince Humphrey, Nippy, In the Shade, Seatown, Count Cavour, Papatu, Mask, Catkin, Celerity 11, Historic, Booster, Thresam, Piuthair, Te Kara, White Fang. The total entered is 41.
First This Season
The Australian-bred three-year-old. Sir Mond (by Seremond) is improving in his work, and'■although very robust when recommissioned some time ago is fining down nicely. His track essays have not shown him to be possessed with more than average ability as a galloper, but time should work the required improvement. He will make his next public 'appearance at the Takapuna meeting at the end of the month.
Elysianor for Levin Elysianor (J. Blanche) had Roburant (C. Bracken) as a companion on a round of the battens at Awapuni the other morning, but the Absurd .elding was too careful of his fences to be of any use as a partner to Elysianor, who drew right away. Elysianor -is engaged at Levin next Saturday. Coming North Hunting Day. who suffered slight injury in the running of the Aucklan! Welcome Stakes, when he finished second to Supremacy, is making full recovery from same and will be ready to take on Honour and the Auckland champion in the G.X. Foal stakes on Boxing Day at Ellerslie. Feilding Cup Seatown ran such a good race at Waverley that he is spoken of as a. possibility in the Feilding Cup, at the end of the month. Piuthair has also been accorded nomination and if she benefits by her outings at Levin and Otaki, these two. who have been off the scene for so long, may be in the firing line at the finish. Seatown was also entered at Takapuna, but apparently he is not coming North. Next Start at Feilding White Fang, since going to Hastings to be trained has not galloped, but being one that does not need a deal of fast work is doing well on ordinary work. Twelve months ago this horse won a handicap at Flemington, runing the 14 miles in 2.4. W. Griffith will be taking the Polydamon gelding to Feilding at the end of the month. Four Horse Sprint Only four horses have been paid up for in the Flying Handicap at Winton to-morrow, and the indications are that Rin Tin Tin will be a sound favourite. In the Shorts Handicap at Wingatui, in which he finished second to Royal Saxon, he had 181 b the better of Receipt. The difference between them now is only 41b, but that is not likely to make a winner of the Paper Money mare, who does not appear to be properly right. Names Claimed
