HUSBAND BEATER
WOMAN FACES ASSAULT CHARGE EQTO ROA NEXT TIME Annie Charlotte Clay, who assaulted her husband in Queen Street yesterday afternoon, was given a chance by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning. Clay, a domestic aged 42, pleaded guilty to being found drunk, but could remember nothing of the assault. Sub-Inspector McCarthy understood that the woman had hit her husband on the head with a bag. A police sergeant had told her to stop but she had struck him again and had to be arrested. Glancing at the diminutive woman in the dock Mr. Hunt asked what sort of man the husband was. “Oh, he is quite a big fellow,” replied Mr. McCarthy. The husband testified that his wife was “a good little woman when sober.” “As they have not been married long I shall give her another chance,” commented the magistrate, “but if she comes up again it means the Island.” Clay was fined 5s for drunkenness and convicted and discharged on the second charge.
