Woman Candidate Makes Box Office Pay Election Expenses

WELLINGTON, To-day. ÜBb. MARGARET YOUNG'S candidature for Wellington Central, already the most conspicuous and most talked of event m the political campaign here, has added, another novelty to the history of politics in New Zealand. Last evening she spoke at the Town Ilall and charged two shillings and one shilling respectively for admission. Notwithstanding that the weather was bitterly cold and wet he building was crowded, and so the candidate, at one stroke, obtains sufficient money for her expenses, and sets U P , a » prece<^ent no woman ever appears to have thought of before. Mrs. Young, Independent Labour candidate for Wellington Central, called on the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troupe, this morning and advised him she proposed to devote half the proceeds of her meeting at the Town Hall last night to Vellmgton charities to be nominated by him. The Mayor has agreed to nominate the charities in accordance with Mrs. Young’s wishes. The amount to be made available is understood to be in the vicinity of £IOO.
