CALLS OF INDUSTRY

UNITED PARTY’S ANSWER UNEMPLOYMENT SOLUTION (Special to THE SUN) TE KCJITI, To-day. Claimng that he was among the prime movers in the formation of the United Party, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, United candidate for Waitomo, addressed a large meeting of electors at Te Kuiti last evening. Speaking on the closer settlement proposal, he said this had particular application to the King Country, where there was unquestionable evidence that Te Kuiti should have been taken as the centre of a. 15-mile radius which, under skilful treatment, would be a prosperous district. Mr. Broadfoot said large amounts of money were being sent each year to America, and little was being done to develop New' Zealand industries: Sir Joseph Ward planned to develop a coal by-products industry which would be the first direct attack on the unemployment problem. Replying to a question as to I.ow he would vote on a no-confidence motion, the candidate said he would vote Reform out, but after that would do nothing which would allow Labour to rule the country. If the Uniteds v ere not strong enough to form a Cabinet, they should then go back to the country. Votes of thanks and confidence in the candidate were passed.
