WORLD TOUR
RETURN OF DEVONPORT COUNCILLOR CANADA AN EYE-OPENER After the formal business of the Devonport Borough Council was finished last evening the councillors adjourned to the Windsor Tea Rooms, where Mr. I. Massey, one of their members, was the guest of the borough. Mr. Massey has just returned from a six months’ tour of U.S.A.. Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland. Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor, briefly expressed the pleasure with which the council saw Mr. Massey resume his seat at the
council table, and how glad all were that he had regained robust health. Other speakers supported the Mayor. Mr. Massey, in recounting his travels, mentioned that Honolulu, with its grassed side-walks in the residential streets, appealed more to him than anv part of the world as the ideal of aesthetic street building. In London he found that one day the authorities would take up a street for repairs and that within 48 hours the buses Would be running over the new work. The bitumen roads of England were a treat to motorists, and he had motored to John O’Groats and back to London. The tour of Canada was an eyeopener. After viewing Niagara the party took in New York. “I had a stiff neck for three days,” explained Mr. Massey, as he detailed the lofty buildings fronting the main streets. He was much struck with the block system of traffic control, whereby in main streets the traffic was swung along or across the streets every alternate eight minutes. The signalling was by coloured lights, and one man handled three miles of road. Coney Island was classed as a place where they teach you to spend money.” The carelessness with which Americans get rid of cash amazed the traveller, but when the people were accused of skiting, it must be admitted that they had reason to be proud ofithe industrial and commercial achievements of their country. A visit to most of the English watering-places was made with a view of picking up information that might be of use to Devonport.
