AEOLIAN ORCHESTRA
LAST CONCERT OF SEASON Last evening the ./Eolian Orchestra gave the last concert of its' season before a fairly large audience in the Town Hall concert chamber. The concert was the last one at which Mr. W. Edgar Webb will appear as conductor of the orchestra, as it is his intention to retire. Mr. Webb has been in charge of the orchestra now for over six years and during his rule much excellent work has been done. Last evening, before tho last selection was played, Mr. Webb thanked the members for the support they had given him. Tho most interesting items on the programme were the “Andante” and “Vivace” movements from Haydn’s Symphony in D, “The Clock.” Both movements gave the strings much hard work and in parts the independ - ent part writing of Haydn was played with much skill. The ’cellos, in Fucik’s “Poemo Eligique,” played with great certainty and finish, and there there were many brilliant effects in Keler Bela’s overture, “Hungarian Lustspiel.” An interesting novelty was Mr. J. Bamber’s bassoon sqlq on the air “Lucy Long,” and the clarinet solo, “Alicante,” played by Mr. W. Carbines was cleverly interpreted. Mr. Carbines also played in a duet with Mr. G. E. Carder (flute), “Lo! Here the Gentle Lark,” by Bishop. Miss Beryl Smith was encored for her contralto solos, “Softly Awakes My Heart” (Saint-Saens), “The Harbour Night Song” (Sanderson), and “The Rosy Morn.” The pianoforte accompaniments were artisticaly played by Miss Maida Hooker.
