Madame Canella might have continued to shelter the man if evidence to the contrary had not resulted in his recommittal to an asylum. The tribunal to-day decided that he was not Professor Canella, but Brunieri, against wroin there were allegations of theft and wife-desertion. A man who was discharged from a mental hospital at Turin early last year was at first identified as Professor Canella, and then claimed by Madame Brunieri as her husband. Early in April it was reported that he had proved incontestably that he was her husband. The case was described as a smashing blow at the fingerprint system, as the police maintained throughout that Canella was identical with a notorious criminal, their fingerprints being identical.
