BIG HOLE IN BOTTOM

STRANDED TANGO MARU NEW ZEALAND WOOL ABOARD (United P.A. — By Telegraph—Ccpyi ight) C Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.5 p.m. THURSDAY ID., Mon. The diver, A. F. Albert, examined the Tango Marti to-day and discovered an eight-foot hole under her bow. The bottom of the vessel is corrugated as if it had struck and broken off a large piece of rock. Two holds are flooded and 1,400 bales of wool are soaked with water. There is little hope of getting the vessel off the rocks. Even if it were refloated, there is considerable doubt as to whether it could be beached two miles away. The wool cargo aboard is worth £250,000 and includes 450 bales from New Zealand. The Aki Maru of the same line has reached Thursday Island, and is bringing back the Tango Maru’s passengers to Sydney. The steamer Kallatina is giving assistance. COLLISION WITH CRUISER LINER’S STEM DAMAGED (United Service) Reed. 11.45 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The White Star liner Runic arrived in the Mersey to-day with her stem damaged above the water line as the result of a collision near Greenock with the British cruiser London, which was returning from her trials. The cruiser had her stern damaged. H.M.R. London is one of the new 10,000ton class and is a sister ship of the Australia which visited Wellington recently.
