CRIME BOOKS AND PLAYS
REVEALING METHODS OF POLICE PANDERING TO THE PUBLIC (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 1.45 p.m. LONDON, Monday. At the police inquiry, which was continued to-day, Captaiu Unett, Chief Constable of Essex, protested that the public taste of late years had been pandered to by endless literature in which crime was the basis. This also applied to successful stage plays, novels and cinema plays. “This publication of the steps taken by the police when investigating crime cannot he helpful to the police,” he said. “Drastic steps should be taken to prevent the leakage of news from official sources. Moreover, such an expression as the ‘Big Five Flying Squad’ should be entirely discontinued. The detection of crime is a most serious matter. Such expressions savour of picture palaces. “Since the war the spirit of the public has altered. It hasn’t the same awe for the police. The public is more inclined to be’truculent.” PEASANTS’ BID FOR POWER POLITICAL SITUATION IN RUMANIA (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) BUCHAREST, Sunday. Mr. Julius Maniu, the leader of the Peasants’ Party, has declined to join a Coalition Government, but says the National Peasants’ Party is willing to take sole responsibility for the government of the country. In any case the peasants could not co-operate with the existing Parliament and there must be a dissolution and a “clean sheet” at home and abroad. Everyone agrees that Mr. Maniu dominates the situation, though five party leaders are striving for power.
