RAILWAY BRIDGE FIRE

NAPIER EXPRESS HELD UP AT DANNEVIRKE SERVICE INTERRUPTED Press Association PALMERSTON N., To-day. Advice lias been received at Palmerston North that last evening the railway bridge at Makotuku, near Dannevirke, was badly damaged by fire. The railway service between Hawke’s Bay and Palmerston North is partially interrupted. The Napier express ran to Ormondville, North-bound to Dannevirke, where passengers and mails transhipped. Twenty-five sleepers of the approach were destroyed, the under-structure was also badly damaged. Repair work is in progress, and the line may be open for traffic to-morrow. It is thought that a spark from a train last evening caused the fire.
