“REVISED VERSION”

WARD MILLIONS SCHEME LOSS TO DOMINION Mr. Alex. Harris, Independent Reform candidate for YVaitemata, speaking at the Cheltenham Kiosk, Devonport, on Saturday evening, explained that despite the invitation of the Prime Minister to stand as the official party representative he had decided to reserve his freedom. He would support the Government on a noconfidence motion, but otherwise reserved his right to act as he considered his constituency desired. The “revised version” of the Ward millions scheme was severely criticised, Mr. Harris giving figures, supplied at his request by the secretary to the Treasury, to show that the loss to the Dominion on the seventy millions of borrowed money would be over £400,000 per annum. The unemployment question was -not due to immigration into. New Zealand, as the war wastage of 24,000 men had not been made up; the number of men brought into New Zealand was less than 22,000.
