LABOUR NOT DIVIDED
RANGITIKEI DENIAL - (From Our Own Correspondent) MARTON, To-day. There has been considerable opposition in Marton to the nomination of Mr. E. F. Andrews, of Auckland, as the Labour candidate' in Rangitikei, firstly because he is a stranger to the district, and secondly because the appearance of Labour in the field creates a vote split, which makes the seat a gift to Reform. The leaders of this opposition declare that there has been a split in the party, and have resolved to vote solidly for the Independent nominee. Speaking at Marton Junction, howeven, Mr. C. J. Duggan, secretary for the Wanganui East branch of the Party, who contested the seat at last election, declared that the rumour of a split was without foundation. “I challenge the truth of the statement,” he said, “and I challenge the men behind the statement to name one financial member of the Party who was present at the meeting which passed the resolution to support the Independent. The Party’s intention to contest Rangitikei and the name of its candidate were announced long before that of the Independent, so why should Labour withdraw now?”
