COUNCIL OF WOMEN HOLDS GARDEN FETE

TO AUGMENT FUNDS Groups of gaily chattering guests strolled on the lawns, under the trees and among the bright flower beds at Mrs. A. M. Ferguson’s home in Victoria Avenue on Saturday afternoon, when the National Council of Women held a very successful garden fete to raise funds for conference expenses and the general management of the council. Stalls arranged under the trees displayed attractive wares to tempt the guests and added considerably to the very substantial sum raised. The stallholders were: Produce and flowers, Mrs. S. T. Wicksteed; needlework and fancy, Miss Earnest; sweets and cakes, Mrs. Howden; kumerology, Mrs. Axford. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn in front of the house, and was capably dispensed by a cheery part of girls from the Query Club. Delightful music was supplied by an orchestra ensconced on a balcony overlooking the gardens. Miss B. Carnachan, president of the Auckland branch of the council, was unable to be present, owing to illness In the family. Mrs. Ferguson wore a gown of black crepe marocain relieved with beige, and black straw hat. Miss Flatt, secretary of the council, was in lilac printed georgette with straw hat to tone. Others present were: • Miss Basten. french grey and cyclamen floral chiffon with crinoline hat to tone. Mrs. Baker, black satin beaute with black straw hat. Mrs. Wakeman, black satin coat with royal blue facings and hat. Mrs. Hamomnd-Hyde, navy blue ensemble. « Miss E. N. Wilson, light-weight bengaline coat of beige with beige crinoline hat. Mrs. McLean, ensemble of black silk marocain. Miss Parker, cigar brown crepe faille coat and brown hat. Mrs. Jelly, navy blue and white spotted crepe de chine gown with navy coat and hat. Mrs. Wicksteed, black marocain gown with black crinoline hat, osprey trimmed. Mrs. David Nathan, french grey face cloth ensemble with hat to tone.. Mrs. John Crook, black georgette frock and black hat. Mrs. Axford, ensemble of petunia face cloth with black hat. Mrs. Northcroft, black and grey marocain ensemble. Miss Joyce Herdman, frock of nile green georgette with picture hat of beige shade. Airs. Raymond, black' face cloth coat and ermine necklet with naples blue hat and accessories. Mrs. Eades. rose beige tailleur with crinoline hat to tone. Miss Quayle, black crepe de chine gown with tailored half coat of black chiffon velvet, beige hat. , „ . _ . .
